SENATOR KRISTINA KENEALLY
DEPUTY LABOR LEADER IN THE SENATE
SHADOW MINISTER FOR HOME AFFAIRS
SHADOW MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP
SHADOW MINISTER FOR GOVERNMENT ACCOUNTABILITY
SENATOR FOR NEW SOUTH WALES
NOMINATION FOR PRESELECTION AS ALP CANDIDATE FOR FOWLER
Today I will nominate for preselection as the Australian Labor Party’s candidate for the seat of Fowler at
the upcoming federal election. If elected by the people of Fowler I look forward to serving as their local
member and as the Minister for Home Affairs, Immigration and Citizenship in a Labor Government led by
Anthony Albanese as Prime Minister.
In doing so, I pay extraordinary tribute to my good friend and current Member for Fowler, Chris Hayes
MP, who announced his retirement earlier this year. Chris is known for his integrity, compassion, and
dedication to his constituents. The families in Fowler have been well-served and represented by Chris,
and if preselected and elected, I pledge to do the same.
Since Chris announced his retirement, I have been approached by ALP branch members urging me to
consider nomination for the seat of Fowler. I am humbled by this encouragement.
In recent days I have had many conversations with branch members in Fowler and others in the local
community, and I have been touched by their enthusiasm and support.
In making this decision, I reflected on my inaugural speech in the NSW Parliament in 2003 where I
outlined the three values that motivate my political activity: a passion for social justice, the importance of
community and a life lived with energy and enthusiasm. In that speech, I said that a community is at its
best when all its members are supported and included.
Serving as the Member for Fowler holds true to those values.
Many of the essential and frontline workers who keep us safe and keep our economy running live in
Fowler – and so too do the thousands of small family businesses that are the backbone of our economy.
Fowler has been hard hit by the third wave of the COVID outbreak. The cities of Liverpool and Fairfield
were amongst the earliest local government areas of concern and have been subject to severe
restrictions and curfews impacting the lives, jobs, and education of hundreds of thousands of residents.
Families in Fowler have been left behind by the New South Wales Liberal Government, which did not
lock down the eastern suburbs early enough when the outbreak started in Bondi. Fowler residents were
left behind again by the Morrison-Joyce Government, which did not secure enough vaccines to protect
Australians from the highly contagious Delta strain.
Serving this community, living in this community, and fighting for them is what I want to do.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to serve as a Senator, and I pay tribute to each of my Labor Senate colleagues for the important work they do, especially in committees and Estimates. The Senate afforded
me the opportunity to establish an inquiry into stillbirth – which tragically occurs 6 times a day in Australia
— that led to the first National Stillbirth Action Plan. Already babies’ lives are being saved.
And it has been an honour to serve as Senator Penny Wong’s deputy and alongside Senator Katy
Gallagher as the Manager of Opposition Business. Both women are strong and principled and very good
But I have always made the choice to step up and fight.
That’s why I’m making the choice now to seek preselection in Fowler – I want to step up and fight for
Fowler in the House of Representatives, for every suburb, every faith community, every small business,
The communities of Fowler are well-known to me given my time as New South Wales Minister for
Disability and Ageing, Minister for Planning, and ultimately Premier of New South Wales. Families in
Fowler face some significant challenges, including job insecurity and housing stress. Fowler is also
dynamic. From the vibrancy of Cabramatta, the renewal of Bonnyrigg, the growth of Liverpool, and the
strong family and faith communities in Bossley Park, Fairfield East, Mount Pritchard, and Prairiewood, I
know and appreciate how important this part of Sydney is right now and into the future.
I thank the party members and affiliated unions who have supported me since my first preselection in
2002 and continue to do so. Together, we fight for working people.
I thank my family too. As always, they have been generous and loving in their support.
If endorsed and preselected, I will fight alongside the rank-and-file Labor members in Fowler to elect an
Albanese Labor Government — because families in Fowler deserve a government that is on their side.
